The midfielder has not earned any money from his time in the Middle East since he joined from Liverpool last summer. He signed a deal worth a reported £350,000 per week, but The Telegraphclaims those wages were deferred and, as he is set to leave the club this month, he will forego the full payment.

The midfielder and Al-Ettifaq have mutually agreed to the termination of his contract just six months after he signed with the club. He is expected to join Ajax, having flown to Europe to organise a deal with the Dutch side. He already has an agreement in principle with the Eredivisie giants.

The report claims that Henderson's decision to defer his wages was partly motivated by the possibility of returning to Britain to play for England without being restricted by limitations on individuals without UK taxpayer status.

The 33-year-old will hope to wrap up his deal with Ajax and get back on top form after a disappointing start to the season in the Saudi Pro League. It is likely he has his eyes on a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.
