Revealed: When Man Utd aim to seal huge double deal and sign Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich

A big update from Sky Sport Germany suggests that both De Ligt and Mazraoui will become Manchester United players before the end of the month "if all goes to plan". The ongoing talks between the Old Trafford club and Bayern Munich are described as "underway" and "positive".

United manager Erik ten Hag had both players during his time in charge of Ajax and is thought to be a driving force behind the double pursuit. The departure of Raphael Varane and ongoing injury concerns regarding Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, on top of Leny Yoro's foot surgery, has left the centre of defence light, which De Ligt could help with. Full-back depth was also an issue last season, which explains the interest in Mazraoui.

Underlining the need for defensive recruitment and strengthening, United conceded 58 goals in 38 league games last season, their most during a single campaign in the Premier League era. It was also the first time since 1989-90 that the club has finished a league season with a negative goal difference.

The transfer window for Premier League clubs ends at 11pm on August 30, giving United just three more weeks to wrap up deals for players they want to sign. At the same time, the season will be up and running, getting underway with the Community Shield against Manchester City on Saturday.
