From the glory days of the late 1960s to the best team of the past decade, Manchester City have had plenty of incredible players. Squeezing them into the greatest line-up of all-time is almost impossible and inevitably there will be legends that will miss out.
Heroes across the generations from Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee to Raheem Sterling and Carlos Tevez will never be forgotten, but only 11 can take their place in GOAL’s greatest ever City team…
Getty ImagesWith 11 winners’ medals in his back pocket already, Ederson is the most successful goalkeeper in City's history and is on the path to becoming the club's all-time No.1.
But few players made their mark quite like Trautmann, the German goalkeeper who went from being a former prisoner-of-war that nobody wanted to one of the most revered players of all time.
Of his 545 appearances, undoubtedly the most memorable was the 1956 FA Cup final when he played on with a broken neck to help City win the trophy.
Getty ImagesThe Argentinian may not have been the most skilful player of the supremely talented squad of the 2010s, but none were more committed to the team.
Signed just before Sheikh Mansour took over the club, he was to remain a first-choice right-back for the next nine years helping them to two Premier League titles.
His opening goal in the famous 3-2 victory over QPR may be forgotten, but his place as a cult hero at the Etihad Stadium is forever secure.
Getty ImagesJoining as a defensive midfielder, Kompany would go on to become the greatest defender in the club’s history and have a statue built in his honour outside the stadium.
A natural leader, the captain helped City to 12 trophies over 11 years and may have stayed even longer had persistent muscle injuries interrupted in his final seasons.
Before leaving the field in tears in his final appearance at the Etihad Stadium, Kompany produced an unforgettable 30-yard strike in a 1-0 victory that would help secure another Premier League title.

Getty ImagesOriginally turned down a transfer to City in 2016 before finally making the move 18 months later and neither he nor the club have regretted the u-turn.
The Spain international is exactly the defender that Pep Guardiola wanted, with his intelligent defending and ability to start attacks out of defence.
Curiously overlooked by France, there are doubts about his ability at the Etihad and his vast collection of silverware may be added to considerably before his time is up.
Despite City’s success in recent years, the left-back position has never been completely dominated by one player so it’s worth going back to the 1960s to find a cult hero.
The youngest ever to play for the club when he made his debut as a 15-year-old, Pardoe went onto establish himself as the first choice as City won the the league, FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup towards the end of the decade.
A broken leg sidelined him for two years but he fought his way back and later became a youth coach, while his grandson Tommy Doyle followed him into the first team shortly before Pardoe passed away in 2020.
(C)Getty ImagesSigned at the age of 28, there were many that questioned the wisdom of paying £30 million ($37m) for a defensive midfielder with just five caps for Brazil.
Nine years on and that transfer was shown to be a magnificent move, with Fernandinho a key component of five Premier League title successes.
An influential figure around the dressing room, his impact grew even more under Guardiola, who trusted his judgment on and off the pitch.
The only player to have a stand named after him, for older supporters Bell still remains the greatest to ever wear the sky blue shirt.
He may have been quiet off the pitch but he was the leader of the successful City side of the 1960s and won 48 caps for England, though he sadly missed the chance to star on the international stage when the Three Lions failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.
Despite a serious knee injury, the midfielder made 501 appearances over 13 years at City and the fact that the club's 2022-23 home kit is a tribute to Bell, who passed in 2021, says everything you need to know about his enduring legacy.
Getty ImagesYaya Toure arrived from Barcelona as a defensive midfielder but it quickly became clear that City were able to give him the freedom to show what an incredibly versatile and intelligent footballer he was.
His very best season came in 2013-14 when he was borderline unplayable, helping City win their second Premier League title with 20 goals.
Any highlights reel of his time at the Etihad will showcase a breathtaking compilation of astonishing goals but that is just a snippet of what he truly brought to the team with an imperious all-round game.
Getty ImagesDe Bruyne may have had a difficult time at Chelsea as a youngster but City were still willing to £60m ($74m) to sign him from Wolfsburg in 2015. It was an inspired signing, with the Belgium going on to prove himself one of the finest players of the modern era.
As well as orchestrating a hugely successful period, De Bruyne has picked up a number of individual honours, winning Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Player of the Year twice.
Quickly rising up the ranks in the all-time assists table, the Belgian could finish his career as the greatest foreign playmaker to ever play in the Premier League.
Getty ImagesNo one even gets close to matching the Argentinian’s incredible goalscoring record over his decade at the Etihad Stadium.
Aguero finished with 260 goals, smashing the previous record held by Eric Brook, who scored 177 times just before the second World War.
If that wasn’t enough, he also contributed the most iconic moment in City’s history and that of the Premier League for good measure when his 94th-minute winner on the final day of the 2012 season snatched the title from Manchester United.
Getty ImagesFor many, the greatest foreign player to ever feature in the Premier League after 10 years of brilliance as the brains behind City’s success.
Earning the nickname ‘El Mago', his touch, composure and vision in the heat of a match were astonishing and all done with such elegant style.
Silva is also the most successful City player on the international stage after winning a World Cup and two European Championships with Spain.
