  • Prestigious award shared
  • Kane gets consolation prize

The Three Lions reached the final of another European Championship – having suffered penalty shootout heartache against Italy three years ago – only to lose again in heart-breaking fashion as Spain ran out 2-1 winners at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

England’s all-time leading marksman Kane, despite questions being asked of his contribution on a regular basis, finished the tournament with three goals to his name, despite coming off early in the second half after a poor showing in the final. That return puts him level with Dani Olmo of Spain, Cody Gakpo of Netherlands, Jamal Musiala of hosts Germany, Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze and Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

UEFA had previously suggested that, in the case of a tie, the outright Golden Boot winner would be determined by assists and then minutes played – putting Olmo in first place. However, European football’s governing body announced shortly before the final that a prestigious prize would be shared between those on the most goals.

  • WHAT NEXT?

Kane goes home with a share of the golden boot, but it will come as little consolation to the England captain after another painful final defeat. He is still on the lookout for his first major trophy as a senior player for club or country, a run he will hope to finally end next season at Bayern Munich.
