  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In the first 45 minutes of Spurs' clash with the non-league side on Sunday, Germany international Werner struggled to make an impact in the contest. Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon had more touches in the opposition box (three) than Werner (two) in the first half and that, and more, prompted many to say the 28-year-old "wouldn't start for Tamworth" on social media.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@mionomedev wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Werner looking like the worst player on the pitch against non-league opposition is impressive even for his standards."

@Zeus1882x tweeted: "If Werner played for them I don’t think he’d be their best player."

@HarryCarlton55 mused: "Timo Werner has 57 caps for Germany and has won the Champions League how can he be so poor?"

@Dave_THFC1882 commented: "12 non-league players on that pitch. Tamworth and Werner," and @fullback03 added: "Werner wouldn’t get in this Tamworth side."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou slated Werner's Europa League display against Rangers in December but said "we're not letting anyone go" when asked about ending his loan from RB Leipzig early this week. However, a return of one goal in 25 appearances this season makes for grim reading. It seems a long time ago that he was winning a Champions League trophy with Chelsea in 2021, not long after being one of the most in-form forwards in Europe.

After this Tamworth cup tie, Postecoglou's Tottenham side are away to bitter rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday.
