'The strangest, maddest game I've ever played' - Harry Maguire admits Man Utd's breathless comeback against Lyon 'summed up' his six-year stay at Old Trafford

United looked to have dropped out of the Europa League in the second leg of their quarter-final against Lyon as they went down 4-2 despite having a two-goal lead in the first half. However, Bruno Fernandes' 116th-minute penalty kicked off an insane comeback with Maguire scoring the second of United's two injury-time goals to help them win the clash 5-4 and book their spot in the Europa League semi-final.

Maguire's time at United has been very topsy-turvy after joining them in 2019 from Leicester City. After becoming the Red Devils' captain in 2020 after a good start to life, he was stripped of the captaincy in 2023. The centre-back has now equated his six years at the club to the match against Lyon and labelled it the 'maddest' game he has played.

Speaking to the media, Maguire said: "It was an incredible feeling to score that winner in such an important game, in a game that was full of emotion and the strangest, maddest game I've ever played in or witnessed.

"I've been here six years now and I've had some great times and some bad times as well. I think that game pretty much summed up my time at this club, to be honest.

"I don't know how I would have felt if I had come here and been speaking to you after a 4-2 defeat - it's not even worth trying to think about that."

United have booked their Europa League semi-final spot against La Liga side Athletic Club, but before that, they will have to take on Wolves and Bournemouth in the Premier League.
