'He's similar to Erling Haaland' - Kevin De Bruyne heaps special praise on Rasmus Hojlund and expects 'a lot of goals' from Man Utd loanee after decisive double in Champions League

De Bruyne and Hojlund combined to devastating effect as Napoli got their first Champions League win of the season. De Bruyne assisted both goals, first with a precise through ball for Hojlund’s composed opener in the 36th minute, then with a pinpoint cross for his powerful header in the 79th. Hojlund's sharp instincts and composure combined with De Bruyne's dictated play throughout, changed the game and proved decisive despite recent scrutiny.

In a post-match interview, the ex-City midfielder complimented Hojlund and shared that his traits reminded him of his old teammate Haaland.

"I think Rasmus has a lot of quality, I think he's quite similar to Haaland in terms of player type, both are left-footed and like to attack space. It was a great night for him and I think he'll help us score a lot of goals from now on," De Bruyne explained.

Asked about the second-goal, the Belgian said: "I was trying to get into that space, waiting for the right moment to serve Hojlund at the right time and then he did the rest."

Hojlund's tenure at United was largely defined by his struggle to find consistent form and a reliable scoring rhythm, resulting in a disappointing haul of just 26 goals across 95 appearances in all competitions. The 2024-25 Premier League campaign proved to be a low point, as the young striker managed only four goals in 28 games while facing fierce competition and numerous tactical shifts. Despite his initial promise, Hojlund saw his opportunities dwindle as he dropped down the team's pecking order.

The striker's career has since found new life following his 2025-26 loan move to Napoli, where he has quickly rediscovered his form with three goals in five appearances across Serie A and the Champions League. This successful start comes with a high-stakes clause: if Napoli secure Champions League qualification, Hojlund's move will become a permanent €44 million (£38m/$52m) transfer.

The victory over Sporting puts Napoli back in contention, but the team will head into the international break after their next league fixture against Genoa on October 5. Shortly after the break, another Champions League test awaits - an away clash against PSV at the Philips Stadium on October 21.
