  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 27-year-old has been the subject of significant transfer speculation after revealing his desire to leave United, particularly following his exclusion from last month’s Manchester derby. Rashford has endured a difficult spell, scoring just 11 league goals across the last two seasons, and he has not played for the Red Devils since their Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are open to offers, with several top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and Barcelona, expressing interest. In addition, three Saudi Pro League teams have reportedly submitted bids, but Rashford is believed to be reluctant to shift base to the Saudi Pro League as he harbours dreams of a Three Lions call-up.

  • WHAT CARLTON COLE SAID

Since taking charge at United, Amorim has frequently aimed digs at Rashford often questioning the forward's professionalism and work ethic. The Portuguese coach recently sparked controversy by claiming he would rather field the club’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than a player who does not put in maximum effort every day. His blunt remarks have only fuelled further scrutiny over Rashford’s future and former England and West Ham striker Carlton Cole slammed Amorim’s handling of the situation on The Dressing Room Podcast.

"I want to know what’s going on. He’s killing him and you’re killing his price tag as well, by the way," he argued.

"Rashford is a commodity, he’s money. If you really want to sell him on, why would you say that?! That’s why I think Amorim is a little bit naive because he’s going with his emotions. He’s thinking, 'Rashford’s not doing what I’m saying and I’m the boss!'"

  • COLE WANTS RATCLIFFE TO STEP IN

Cole also believes Manchester United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, must step in and advise Amorim to be more strategic in his handling of Rashford’s future.

"If I’m Ratcliffe, I’m looking at him [Amorim] and thinking, 'You need to shut your mouth! We’re trying to sell him here and you’re saying that he’s not living the right lifestyle!'," he added.

"Ratcliffe needs to be clear with Amorim, 'Stay away from the Rashford situation please, because we’re trying to do a deal here', there has got to be communication."

    WHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD?

With the January transfer window in full swing, United are looking to finalise Rashford’s departure while ensuring they receive a suitable fee. While clubs like Juventus and Barcelona remain potential destinations, the player's significant £300,000 per week wages are a major stumbling block.
