Barcelona’s medical staff and supporters were left on edge after Lewandowski signalled for an early substitution during Poland’s 1-0 victory over Lithuania in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The veteran striker left the pitch after experiencing discomfort in his calf, triggering immediate concerns over his fitness.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Polish national team had to fight hard for their opening qualification win in Warsaw on March 21, as they struggled to break down a resilient Lithuanian defence. Just when the two teams seemed destined to share the spoils, Lewandowski delivered in the dying moments with a clinical finish, registering his 85th international goal. However, celebrations quickly turned into concern when the Barcelona striker immediately gestured to the bench, indicating he needed to come off.

  • WHAT LEWANDOWSKI SAID

Following the match, Lewandowski attempted to ease worries by explaining that his withdrawal was purely precautionary.

“I’ve had some problems for three games, but today it was better,” he told reporters. “In the end, it was better to let go off, so nothing would get worse. I think everything should be fine. I hope it’s not a big problem.”

Poland’s head coach, Michał Probierz, also reassured fans and club officials that there was no serious concern over Lewandowski’s condition. The manager praised the forward’s commitment to the national team and confirmed that he was expected to be available for their next match.

“Lewandowski had a minor injury. But it’s nothing serious, and I think he’ll be able to play in the next match,” he said.

“This is nothing new, and we have to congratulate him for showing up at training camp and doing everything he can to rebuild the team and be a strong point for the national team.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR LEWANDOWSKI?

With Barcelona closely monitoring Lewandowski’s situation, the timing of his injury scare is far from ideal. The forward is set to return to club duty immediately after Poland’s fixture against Malta, with the Catalan giants facing a congested schedule with some of their international players having very little recovery time before their La Liga clash against Osasuna on March 27.
