Ten Hag is widely expected to be relieved of his services at Old Trafford at the end of the season and United are looking at possible replacements. Tuchel has emerged as one of the favoured candidates, inews reports, and he is said to be eager to return to the Premier League after he leaves Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

While Tuchel is favoured by many at co-owners INEOS, they also have Southgate, Zinedine Zidane and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann on their shortlist. However, those three have expressed serious concerns about taking the job given the problems that have plagued the club over the last decade.

Despite reaching the FA Cup final this season, United have endured a dismal time throughout Ten Hag's second year in charge. Their 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday was their 13th in the Premier League this season - the most they have suffered in a single season.

Ten Hag's team could play an important role in the Premier League title race this weekend as they come up against contenders Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. They then host Newcastle in the league three days later.
