  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Olmo is not currently registered by Barcelona to play in La Liga after the league and the Spanish Football Federation jointly rejected Barca's attempts to add him and Pau Victor to their squad. Since, however, the National Sports Council decreed that both can play until the case is officially settled. It means they can both feature in the Supercopa de Espana, and potentially La Liga from next week, but now, The Athletic has revealed that Barcelona were warned to avoid signing Olmo in the summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Per the report, sporting director Deco presented Barca's financial department with the figures that would be required to take Olmo from RB Leipzig in the summer. Barca ultimately paid €60 million (£50m/$62m) plus add-ons to bring the Spain international in, but the club's advisors warned against pressing the green light on the deal. They believed at the time they would struggle to register Olmo, and so it has proved.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Athletic say the temporary registration for Olmo and Victor is expected to last around three months, which could see the former available for the next 15 games in all competitions, including the final of the Supercopa de Espana and a key La Liga clash with Atletico Madrid.
