Before the two teams meet in early February for the rematch, here is how GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Stamford Bridge...
GettyDjordje Petrovic (7/10):
Wasn't called on a great deal but looked alert when required and made a couple of smart stops. Made a terrific save to deny Matty Cash in the second half and in this form, may keep goalkeeper Robert Sanchez out of the team.
Alfie Gilchrist (6/10):
Came into the starting lineup at the last minute as Levi Colwill was injured in the warm-up and was competent enough at right-back. Was fortunate Douglas Luiz's goal was ruled out for handball after his unconvincing headed clearance.
Axel Disasi (7/10):
Started in the centre of defence after Colwill's injury and then moved to right-back when Ben Chilwell was introduced in the second half and looked secure in both roles.
Thiago Silva (7/10):
Made a number of important tackles and blocks at the back, without any lapses in concentration from the veteran defender. Got away with John McGinn nearly pinching the ball from his feet late on.
Benoit Badiashile (6/10):
The 6ft 5in Frenchman didn't always look that comfortable when utilised as a left-back, especially against the pacey Moussa Diaby. However, he didn't make any telling errors and came up with some good headers to clear the danger.
GettyMoises Caicedo (6/10):
Seems to be a more settled player at Chelsea following his summer move from Brighton as he got stuck in for his team in midfield.
Enzo Fernandez (7/10):
Had a bit more swagger than what the Blues have seen from the Argentinian international at times this season as he carried the ball well and helped give them the edge in the centre of the park.
Conor Gallagher (7/10):
Provided plenty of energy and powerful attacking runs throughout much of the contest. Is forming a strong partnership in midfield with Caicedo and Fernandez.
Getty ImagesNoni Madueke (6/10):
Showed plenty of good wing play and wasn't afraid to get forward and take on Villa's left-back Alex Moreno but he missed some gilt-edged chances, especially in the first half. His finishing and final product needs to improve.
Cole Palmer (7/10):
Looks a class act at times but like Madueke perhaps should have done better when presented with big opportunities - several of which were denied by Villa keeper Martinez.
Raheem Sterling (7/10):
Was a lively customer down the left and gave Matty Cash a number of issues at right-back. Was a nuisance for Unai Emery's team.

Didn't get many chances to have an impact on the game.
Armando Broja (5/10):
Had a heavy touch in a good position when he came on and the chance was gone.
Mykhailo Mudryk (n/a):
The Ukranian barely touched the ball.

Came on with minutes remaining.
Mauricio Pochettino (7/10):
At times you can't see what Chelsea are trying to do under the Argentine but it seems like patterns of play are developing and they are playing some good football. His substitutions didn't have much impact, mind.
