Paul Mullin reveals his surprise favourite Wrexham game where he failed to score & even missed a penalty!

The striker has become a star at Wrexham, scoring a staggering 83 goals in 106 games for the Red Dragons. In that time, he has seen the club promoted into the Football League, while also taking multiple FA Cup scrapes, but his favourite game for the club is actually one in which he failed to score.

Mullin recounts the story in his recently-released autobiography, My Wrexham Story.

"Let me tell you about my favourite Wrexham game. One that’s a bit more obscure than you might think, especially when you consider the fact that I missed a penalty. I’m taking you back to Maidenhead at home on a Tuesday night in November 2022. I bet even Wrexham fans will struggle to remember too much about that encounter. But I do. It was a horrible night, the pitch was awful, and the weather was disgusting. But as we battled through those foul conditions to win 1–0, it was the moment when I clearly thought, ‘Yes, we’ve got a team.’

"For a couple of seconds my mind went back to pre-season when we were sat in that bar getting to know each other that little bit better, bonding, listening to each other’s stories and having a laugh. And now here we were on this awful night, battling to hang on to a lead until the final whistle, facing a team constantly playing tricky long diagonals. It was a truly terrible game to play in. But afterwards, the feeling that this team would run through brick walls for each other was overwhelming. Back in pre-season the manager had trusted us to go out and have a drink and not treat the whole thing like a holiday. That November night we repaid that trust massively."

The game was won by a goal from Aaron Hayden, and Wrexham would go on to win promotion to the Football League. They are now second in League Two, and on track for back-to-back promotions into League One, with Mullin still scoring plenty of goals. He has netted seven league goals in 13 games this season.

The club will aim to continue their excellent form this season against Forest Green Rovers this weekend. They are currently five points behind leaders Stockport and level on points with third-placed Barrow.
