'I'm upset we let him go' - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer angered by Man Utd's sale of Scott McTominay but proud of Bruno Fernandes & Harry Maguire's continuity

McTominay, who is a product of Manchester United’s youth system, completed a £25m move to Napoli during the summer transfer window. His departure was largely influenced by the club’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, which forced them to offload players to balance their books. Since arriving in Serie A, the 28-year-old has enjoyed a stellar debut season, quickly establishing himself as a vital member of Napoli’s squad. His contributions have been impressive, with seven goals and four assists across all competitions, making him a key player in Napoli’s pursuit of silverware.

After McTominay’s success in Italy, Solskjaer expressed his frustration at United's decision to let him go.

In an interview with The Athletic, Solskjaer said, "Scotty is doing well at Napoli. I’m upset that we let him go because he was important last season when he kept popping up with goals. His heart and his knowledge of the culture were important."

However, the Norwegian is happy to see Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire flourish at Old Trafford.

"It’s still good to see Bruno Fernandes and Harry (Maguire) doing well," he said.

McTominay made his first-team debut under Jose Mourinho, but it was Solskjaer who truly gave him an extended run in the squad. During Solskjaer’s tenure, the midfielder featured in 115 matches, scoring 14 goals and becoming a dependable presence in United’s midfield.

“Scott has got the Man Utd DNA, and it’s sad to see him go,” Solskjaer had earlier told The Athletic in a separate interview. “It’s similar to when Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck left. I’m sure he’ll go on to do great things and show both his football and personal qualities. He’s a top pro with a great attitude. He scores important goals for club and country while always wanting to learn and improve.”

Since taking charge of Besiktas in January, Solskjaer has settled in well, overseeing an impressive run of form. His team has won five consecutive matches and suffered only one defeat under his leadership, which has seen them climb to the fourth spot in the Super Lig standings.

Besiktas will look to continue their momentum when they face Kayserispor on Saturday. Meanwhile, Manchester United will be back in action on Sunday, as they welcome Fulham to Old Trafford for a fifth-round FA Cup tie.
