  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The Seattle-based NWSL side announced that they will celebrate and honor the career of Rapinoe, who made an impact larger than life - on and off the pitch. The multi-time FIFA World Cup Champion with the USA, Rapinoe was one of three players in club history to rep the Reign badge from their inaugural 2013 season through 2023; a decade on the pitch.

    “I have lived so much life in this jersey and I'm humbled to see it retire alongside me. It represents so much more than myself - a team, a city, and a lifetime of memories," said Rapinoe. "Thank you to the Reign and to my teammates for the love, the support and the opportunity to leave a piece of my heart on the field."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Across 126 matches for the NWSL side, Rapinoe net 54 goals and tallied 28 assists, setting club records in both departments. She ranks fourth across regular season appearances, starts and minutes played for the Seattle-based club, too. Throughout her storied career, she made the NWSL best and second-best XI a combined six times across the league.

    “It’s nearly impossible to put into words the impact Pinoe has had in this sport, the league, this city and especially our club,” said Seattle Reign FC Head Coach Laura Harvey. “She cemented herself as one of the greatest and we’re proud to celebrate all that she has accomplished on the field while wearing the number 15. She made an everlasting impact in our locker room through her loyalty, leadership, courage and commitment. We can’t wait to celebrate P later this season.”

    “The number 15 jersey will forever be remembered for not only the person who wore it, but for everything and everyone she represented along her journey with the club,” said Seattle Reign FC General Manager Lesle Gallimore. “Megan Rapinoe's legacy and the retirement of her Seattle Reign FC jersey, the first in club history, is fitting, deserved, and hopefully a reminder to everyone that we were fortunate to witness her time here.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR SEATTLE REIGN AND RAPINOE?

    The NWSL side will make their 2024 debut on Sunday against star-studded Washington Spirit. Their campaign will get underway after that, and Rapinoe will be rooting on her ex-club along the way.
