'We’re confident in our goalkeepers' - Mazatlán FC coach Robert Dante Siboldi shuts down Guillermo Ochoa rumors as Mexico star remains a free agent

Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa has been without a club since the summer and continues searching for a team where he can remain in contention for Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad at the 2026 World Cup. The 39-year-old goalkeeper hopes to secure a starting role to strengthen his chances of making history with a sixth World Cup appearance.

Rumors recently linked Ochoa with Mazatlán FC, but head coach Robert Dante Siboldi dismissed the speculation. 

“No, I don’t know anything about that," he said. "It’s just rumors. He’s a great figure in Mexican football, but we are confident with the three goalkeepers we have, even with the fourth who has a great future. There’s nothing to it, it’s only a rumor."

There’s no need to hit the panic button just yet, but the fact that Ochoa is struggling to find a club at age 40 is certainly not a good sign for his chances of reaching next year’s World Cup - a milestone that would be a fitting reward for such an outstanding career.

The starting goalkeeper spot for Mexico is expected to be contested between Luis Ángel Malagón and Raúl Rangel, while the battle for the third roster spot remains open. Ochoa is in contention alongside Alex Padilla, Carlos Acevedo, Carlos Moreno, and other promising goalkeepers.

Ochoa  dreams of becoming the only player ever to appear in six World Cups, after featuring in Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are also chasing a historic sixth tournament next year.
