Mats Hummels' replacement?! Borussia Dortmund eye surprise move for Republic of Ireland defender Jake O'Brien

The German giants are expected to see veteran centre-back Hummels leave the club this summer. AC Milan have been linked as the most likely destination as it has been reported that he is not interested in joining clubs in either the United States or Saudi Arabia.

With Hummels on his way out on a free transfer, Dortmund are looking to snap up a younger option to slot into the centre of defence and Irish Independent claims that O'Brien has emerged as a candidate. However, AC Milan and Everton are also said to be interested in him, while Lyon already turned away approaches in January.

O'Brien joined Lyon from Crystal Palace last year and impressed for the Ligue 1 side. The 23-year-old scored five goals and registered two assists in 32 appearances in all competitions in his breakthrough season for the French side.

O'Brien, who made his senior Ireland debut in the 2-1 win against Hungary on Tuesday, is contracted to Lyon until 2027 and the French giants may hope to hold onto the defender despite the interest from Germany, Italy and England.
