As tempers flared after the final whistle, referee Oliver issued four red cards, including one to Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, who both confronted the officials over what they saw as biased refereeing decisions. Slot’s anger resulted in a two-match touchline ban and a £70,000 fine, imposed by an independent FA commission.
Getty Images SportThe FA has now released its official findings, detailing Slot’s expletive-laden comments that led to his punishment. According to the report, Slot’s frustration was evident the moment he shook Oliver’s hand, during which he allegedly stated, “You’ve f**** given them everything”** before sarcastically adding that he hoped the referee was “proud of that performance.” Slot did not stop there. Just a minute later, he once again approached Oliver, this time making a bold statement: “If we don’t win the league, I’ll f**** blame you.” He then reportedly turned to the assistant referee and shouted twice that the officiating had been “a f**** disgrace.”
The FA published a written document which read: "It was alleged that AS' manner was confrontational and aggressive. It was alleged that he initially used abusive words whilst shaking the Referee's hand including that the Referee had 'f****** give them everything' and that AS hoped that the Referee 'was proud of that performance'.
"The Referee thereafter confirms (having reviewed the video footage to clarify) that he was approached again by AS around one minute later. In this exchange, AS once again shook the Referee's hand and said 'If we don't win the league, I'll f****** blame you'. It is then further alleged that AS turned to the Assistant Referee and shouted twice that it was 'a f****** disgrace'. As a result of AS' conduct, he was shown a red card by the Referee."
While Slot admitted to breaching FA Rule E3, which mandates that participants conduct themselves in a manner that does not bring the game into disrepute, he disputed some of the phrasing attributed to him.
The Liverpool boss argued that instead of threatening to blame Oliver for Liverpool’s title chances, he actually said, “If we don’t win the league, I will have you to thank for that.” However, the FA dismissed this distinction, maintaining that Slot’s language was still improper and warranted punishment regardless of the exact wording.
The report added: "In his submissions AS, whilst admitting the Charges, disputed the language alleged to have been used and suggested there may have been confusion between what AS and SH [Sipke Hulshoff, Liverpool assistant head coach] said to the Referee. It was alleged that AS said whilst shaking the Referee's hand, 'if we don't win the league, I'll f****** blame you'. Instead, AS asserts that he in fact said, 'if we don't win the league, I will have you to thank for that'."
However, Slot did not deny calling the Assistant Referee a “f**** disgrace". But he insisted that his words were not intended as personal insults, but rather a general expression of frustration over the match officiating.
The manager later explained in a press conference: "I think what happened was that the extra time, that additional five minutes that ended up being eight, a lot happened, and the emotions got the better of me. If I look back at it I would love to do it differently. I am hoping to do it differently next time as well.”
