Lionel Messi has been told that he could make an even “bigger” impact in MLS if he moves into management after hanging up his boots.

There is no suggestion that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is considering retirement any time soon. Injuries are being picked up on a more regular basis at 37 years of age, but the Argentine superstar remains a world-class performer when fully fit.

He is tied to a contract at Inter Miami that includes an option for 2026 – which could take him through the next World Cup. There will, however, come a day when he has to walk away from competitive action and make a big decision on what happens next.
WHAT KLEBERSON SAID
Former Manchester United and Brazil star Kleberson, who is currently an assistant coach at MLS side New York City FC, has told DAZN of Messi potentially moving into the dugout: “The change in the way people see MLS since Messi joined is huge. Everything he brings to the league already as a player from his performances, to viewing figures, to money is unbelievable. As a head coach for an MLS team, I think the impact could be even bigger. Obviously, not all great players become great managers but his chances of success at a team like Miami or someone else are high.”

Messi is working his way back from an ankle injury at present, with Inter Miami hoping to have him back for the business end of a bid for MLS Cup glory. If he can steer clear of serious knocks, then the all-time great should still have a few years left in him yet.
