‘Wouldn’t rule anything out’ – Lionel Messi keeping his own Argentina team-mates guessing as Leandro Paredes reacts to 2026 World Cup speculation

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner finally got his hands on the prize he coveted most when inspiring his country to global glory at Qatar 2022. Having completed his medal collection and cemented a standing alongside the likes of Diego Maradona and Pele, Messi has remained coy when it comes to his long-term international future.

He initially suggested that he would not make another of FIFA’s flagship events, but has since softened that stance. Head coach Lionel Scaloni is hoping to see his talismanic captain play on, while Gianni Infantino has boldly claimed that Messi could continue until the age of 47 at the 2034 World Cup.

Paredes is unable to shed any light on his illustrious countryman’s thinking, with the likes of Nicolas Otamendi and Angel Di Maria also mulling over when to call it a day. Roma midfielder Paredes has told DirecTV: “Nico is sure to stay with us for a while. Leo made a comment the other day and said that if things went well and if he felt fit, he wouldn't rule anything out.”

Inter Miami star Messi is still part of the Argentina set-up for now, as they count down the days to a Copa America title defence in 2024, with the legendary 36-year-old up to 180 caps and 106 goals for the Albiceleste.
