Lamine Yamal thanks 'idol' Neymar as Barcelona youngster revels in praise from legends amid incredible performances for club and country

The 17-year-old forward continues to bask in the spotlight, capping off a stellar 2024 with yet another accolade, solidifying his status as one of football’s brightest talents. After the young forward clinched the Kopa Trophy and was also named the Golden Boy, he collected his third individual accolade on Friday when he was named the Best Emerging Player at the Globe Soccer Award.

In the Globe Soccer voting, Yamal came out on top against a pool of formidable contenders. Among them were his Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsi, Manchester United duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, Real Madrid’s Arda Guler, Manchester City’s Savinho and Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz. He played a pivotal role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 victory in Germany which might have propelled him to the podium ahead of the others.

When asked by Mundo Deportivo, how he copes with the immense praise and scrutiny at such a young age, Yamal showcased his grounded mindset.

"At the end of the day, I focus on thinking and playing football. I am incredibly thankful for all the legends who have spoken kindly about me, especially Neymar, who has been my idol forever," he said.

Currently sidelined due to an ankle injury, Yamal is working towards a swift recovery to return to action for Barcelona. His next target is to regain fitness in time for the Supercopa de Espana semi-final against Athletic Club on January 8.
