The sporting icon made sure that he was in attendance for Messi's Miami debut against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup back in July 2023. James had a wonderful time in the stands as Messi scored a brilliant free-kickin the final minute of injury time to secure a memorable win for the Herons. After the match, the basketball legend walked up to Messi and embraced the record Ballon d'Or winner to extend a warm welcome to the United States.

The Lakers player seems to have taken a keen interest in soccer since the arrival of Messi and insisted that the 2022 World Cup winner's arrival will be key to inspiring next-generation fans to take up the sport.

“Seeing Messi, the GOAT of soccer, honour the MLS with his presence is a total game-changer for us," he said in a conversation with Dave McMenamin of ESPN. "His arrival not only elevates the league but also inspires a new generation of football fans in our country. It takes unparalleled dedication, work ethic and talent to achieve what Messi has, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for him. I wish him all the best."

Although Messi is respected and admired across the globe by his millions of fans, he faced flak from disgruntled supporters in the Far East after he missed Inter Miami’s friendly in Hong Kong on Sunday. The all-time great has moved on to Japan for the next assignment and blamed "bad luck" for missing out on the friendly due to an injury.

Messi remains unsure whether he will be fit enough to participate against Vissel Kobe on Wednesday. It is the final friendly of a jet-setting international tour that has taken them from El Salvador to Japan via the Middle East. Upon returning to the US they will play another friendly against Messi’s first club Newell’s Old Boys, before facing a 2024 MLS campaign opener at home to Real Salt Lake on February 21.
