United States bound? Successful coach Jonatan Giraldez tells Barcelona he will leave after contract expires amid offer from NWSL club

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Giraldez has decided he will depart the Catalan club at the end of the season, ESPN reports, having already rejected offers to extend his contract beyond next summer. It was reported this week that the coach has received interest from multiple NWSL clubs in the United States, with one club said to have offered him an 'astronomical' offer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Having been on Lluis Cortes's coaching staff before, Giraldez took over as Barca's head coach in 2021 and has had tremendous success in his two years in charge. Barca have advanced to the last two Champions League finals and won the Liga Femeni in each of the previous two seasons, a feat that earned him a nomination for The Best FIFA Women's Coach of the Year.

    Barca under Giraldez went on to 57 straight league wins in his first 57 games. The record run was finally ended when they drew 1-1 to Sevilla on May 10 earlier this year. They are now on a 17 game winning streak in all competitions.
