Itumeleng Khune was preferred in goal ahead of the club's number one keeper Brandon Petersen who has made costly mistakes this season."Brandon [exclusion] was a psychological thing. It could have happened to Khune, it could have happened to [Bruce] Bvuma," the former SuperSport United coach stated."We need to protect what belongs to us and sometimes we have to make those decisions in order to protect the players for the future."I think he will just get stronger and stronger."

Why Khune replaced Petersen

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was singled out for praise after showing glimpses of brilliance having recovered from an injury that put him out for long. "Mshini [Ngcobo] is the young Kaizer Chiefs player of the future. I think he just misses out on a lot of match fitness but he had a big injury, a lot of you know that," Johnson said."He came back recently, he was out for a while, six months. So he’s just come back this season. He’s showing his capabilities. If we can get him ASAP back to where he should be then he will play more often."

Ngcobo is Chiefs future

Cape Town Spurs coach Sead Connor was cautious with his words when asked about the potential of youngster Luke Baartman who scored his first league goal on Wednesday."I spoke about him last week and I don’t really want to indulge too much about him," the caretaker coach responded when asked about the teenager. "As you have said, he is a 17-year-old and we need to keep his feet on the ground. But he is a good prospect and he sniffs some goals like he did against Chiefs."My job is to keep his feet on the ground, keep him focused, and get him to the next level where I believe he can go."

Connor further exuded confidence Spurs will pull out of the relegation zone if their display is anything to consider."I don’t think we are a relegation side, the football that we play is better than a lot of teams above us. Even early on in the season, they were unlucky in games that I watched where they were punished for mistakes," he said."Against Chiefs, in the first half, we worked on making sure that our fullbacks close down their wide men and the midfielders doubled up. We didn’t do that twice and both crosses led to goals."When I took over, they were on seven defeats in a row yet the confidence within the group is strong. Do we have deficiencies within our squad? Yes, we do. Are we the worst squad in the league? No, I don't think so."

Spurs not worst team in the PSL

Johnson insists the Glamour Boys have the potential to be among the best in the world if a winning mentality is instilled in the current squad. "It is something that appeals to me but there is something bigger," Johnson told the media."I have been to some of the biggest teams in the world and I worked with one of the biggest teams in the world. [Trust me] when I say this team has got that potential."I think you need to bring [the mentality] from a bigger team and put it in this team, but not the head coach because he will be changed in any club," he continued."This team is not where it is supposed to be and maybe with the little knowledge that I have, I think this team can be as big as it should be."There is a cloth for me that needs to be shown to the rest of the world and I think this team has got it. So whether I am the head coach [on a permanent basis] or interim, I have come to this team because there is something that nobody else has."
