Ex-Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise challenges PSL chiefs to find a way to help Orlando Pirates & Mamelodi Sundowns win the Caf Champions League

Teko Modise believes the<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/premier-soccer-league/yv73ms6v1995b5wny16jcfi3" target="_blank"> Premier Soccer League</a> does not back their teams enough to do well in the Caf Champions League.Giving an example of Mamelodi Sundowns, Modise feels the league did not give the Brazilians enough time to prepare for the more challenging continental competition semi final.Masandawana faced a tricky Sekhukhune United in between their Champions League semi-final first and second leg against Esperance.

WHAT HAPPENED?

“The most difficult games [in football] are the semi-finals because they are so tough, exhausting that the final becomes easier, once you jump that, once you get into the final, you can easily win it,” Modise said as per <a href="https://www.idiskitimes.co.za/caf-champions-league/how-psl-can-help-sa-giants-in-cafcl-modise/" target="_blank">iDiski Times.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;“The difficulty is the semi-final, but also if we&nbsp;really&nbsp;want to have… South African teams winning Champions, how then do we support them? If you want Orlando Pirates to do well in continental football, if you want Sundowns to do well in continental football, you need to have space and room for them to do so.“You can’t be playing back-to-back, land here, two days later, play and then no rest and then play, it doesn’t help South African football, it doesn’t help those teams who are participating in those," the former Bafana star added.&nbsp;“It’s also having negative connotations towards teams who want to compete in that stage, you look at the schedule and the leniency you getting from the PSL, maybe if those things get sorted out you will see those things doing well in the continental space.“They will have the opportunity to rest and be focused on it. Look at Esperance, they came here with seven days rest before playing Sundowns, and Sundowns had two days before they played – whether the players played or not – it’s just the effort or work they put in," he continued. &nbsp;“The analysis is just the game – I just think with us and the trajectory that we have right now as South Africans, especially from the football side, I think if we give teams space to perform well, you will have many others who want to perform in that space.”

WHAT MODISE SAID

While expectations are high on Sundowns to win the Champions League, Chiefs, Pirates and other South African clubs who qualify are not pressured in this competition.The Buccaneers failed to even reach the group stage of this season's Champions League and Amakhosi last played in Africa's premier club competition in the 2020/21 season where they made it all the way to the final before falling to a 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly.

Sundowns have already wrapped up the PSL title and are chasing points records and 'invincible' status.<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/orlando-pirates-vs-chippa-united-preview-kick-off-time-tv-channel-squad-news/bltd0e76823de33b2a4" target="_blank">Pirates are bidding for the number two position and they face Chippa United</a> on Wednesday in their bid to qualify for the second season in a row.Chiefs are pushing to finish the season in the PSL top-eight and they <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/kaizer-chiefs-mamelodi-sundowns-5-1-defeat-wake-up-call-referees-payroll-gave-red-card-to-amakhosi-assistant-coach-brandon-petersen-fans/bltf2edc22f88f7cfb5">drew 2-2 with TS Galaxy</a> on Tuesday.
