The Red Devils are set to host Jurgen Klopp's side in the quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, where Ten Hag has revealed that he believes his players can 'save the season' by progressing past their rivals. United are enduring a disappointing campaign currently, with the club currently down in sixth in the Premier League table.

    WHAT TEN HAG SAID

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup clash against Liverpool, Ten Hag said: “I think we have to save the season. But we know we have to catch up in the Premier League but now we have an opportunity to win silverware. The only opportunity is the FA Cup, so we are only three wins away but big games and we have to play our best.

“Sunday is a test for us, but we like the test, we like the challenges and we can be, to a certain range, relaxed because we believe in ourselves. But on Sunday we have to prove (that).”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As well as faltering domestically, United also crashed out of the Champions League after finishing rock bottom of Group A. They also crashed out of the Carabao Cup early, losing 3-0 to a much-changed Newcastle United side back in November.

The game against Liverpool now carries even more weighting, given it is the last chance for United to secure any kind of silverware this season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?

Following the FA Cup clash against Liverpool, a number of United stars will depart the club to join up with their international teams over the break. Ten Hag's men will reconvene after this period, with an away fixture against Brentford on March 30 on the horizon.
