Emi Martinez future in doubt as Aston Villa eye transfer swoop for Real Madrid goalkeeper to replace Argentina international

Argentina international Martinez has been at Villa Park since 2020. He has helped the Villans to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, allowing them to grace the Champions League in 2024-25.

He is a two-time winner of the FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award and has a World Cup winners’ medal to his name. Martinez is considered to form part of the global elite, but is now 32 years of age.

The Birmingham Mail reports on supposed interest in Martinez from the Saudi Pro League. If he were to leave in the summer of 2025 - with Robin Olsen also set to depart as his contract expires - then a new No.1 would be required.

It is being claimed that Villa are mulling over a move for Andriy Lunin. The Ukraine international is currently filling back-up duties behind Thibaut Courtois at La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Lunin is tied to a contract through to 2030, but the 26-year-old could be lured to England with the promise of regular game time if Martinez were to leave the West Midlands and a suitable offer be tabled by the ambitious Villans.
