Eight fans arrested after brawl outside of restaurant ahead of England clash against Serbia

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    There were reports of violence in Gelsenkirchen in the hours before the game, which England went on to win courtesy of Jude Bellingham's early goal. It was later reported by local authorities that seven Serbian citizens and one from England were taken into custody. A criminal complaint was also filed for grievous bodily harm. It was confirmed that no Albanian citizens were involved, despite some social media claims of such.

    Ahead of the game, footage was circulating that appeared to show a mass brawl outside a restaurant, which included chairs and furniture being thrown. Police had to step in to restore calm. Other footage uploaded onto X, however, showed different sets of England and Serbia fans mixing harmoniously.

    There is currently a UK police presence in Germany assisting the local authorities while the tournament is ongoing. They have pledged to to issue bans to any English fans found to be involved in unrest and violence.

    England will book their place in the knockout stages as early as Thursday night if they can beat Denmark, who were held by Slovenia in their opening game earlier on Sunday. Next up for Serbia is Slovenia in a game both sides will hope to win.
