    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The contract extension represents a major change in fortunes for De Gea. The former Spain international began to make mistakes at a worrying rate during his final few seasons with United and spent the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign as a free agent after he was released by the Red Devils.

De Gea kept 11 clean sheets and saved two of the three penalties he faced during 35 Serie A matches this season. He also picked up an assist in a 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona in November.

    WHAT NEXT FOR DE GEA?

De Gea's new contract is expected to be announced soon even though Fiorentina are currently without a manager. Raffaele Palladino was most recently in charge but the former Juventus winger agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
