Chelsea issued Xavi Simons warning as RB Leipzig director insists they don't need to sell Netherlands international

Chelsea have experienced a busy summer transfer window, but they still remain hopeful of signing Simons from RB Leipzig, who reportedly turned down advances from Manchester City and Bayern Munich as he remains keen on a switch to Stamford Bridge. However, the Bundesliga heavyweights have issued a staunch warning to the Club World Cup winners, telling them that they are under no obligation to sell the ex-Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid if the asking price is not met. 

At the end of last season, Simons conveyed his desire to leave the club after Leipzig failed to qualify for the Champions League. Die Roten Bullen will not stand in the player's way and will respect his wish, but are believed to be demanding at least €70 million (£60m/$82m) for the Dutch attacker. Per reports, Chelsea will soon submit a formal bid to Leipzig as they continue their efforts to offload players and generate funds. 

Speaking to Bild, Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schafer said: "That's not a must. We know his great ambitions to play in a top league for a title contender. He wants to prove himself at the highest level. And if it makes economic sense, we're open. But only then. If it doesn't make financial sense for us, we look forward to another season with this outstanding player."

The key to Chelsea acquiring Simons was Christopher Nkunku's move to Bayern Munich. However, the operation on the verge of collapse, as the Premier League giants are adamant on fetching a €40m (£34m/$47m) fee for the Frenchman instead of loaning him out. Nkunku's contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2029 and the player is also believed to be against a temporary move.
