    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, who now works as talkSPORT Breakfast host, has backed Lampard to return to coaching in the Premier League and take charge of West Ham if they part ways with current head coach Julen Lopetegui. The Spaniard replaced David Moyes at the London Stadium in the summer, however, he is now under tremendous pressure after a miserable start in the 2024-25 campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lopetegui is said to still have the backing of the club management despite winning just three of his first 10 Premier League matches, however, things could change if the Hammers fail to beat Everton this weekend. Under such circumstances, Stelling suggests that the club should go after Lampard, who has not managed a team since his short stint at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea's interim coach in 2023.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

While responding to a fan query on talkSPORT's Breakfast show, Stelling said: "I’m going to mention someone who might divide opinions. Is it time, if Lopetegui goes, for West Ham to bring Frank Lampard home? Just a thought. He is available. He’s been mentioned in connection with the Roma job, but West Ham would be ideal for him. I know there’s a man in situ at the moment, but it is just a speculative suggestion at the moment."

    WHAT NEXT FOR FRANK LAMPARD?

The 46-year-old has also emerged as a shock candidate to take over at AS Roma as the Serie A club are reportedly looking to part ways with Ivan Juric. It remains to be seen if Lampard would be open to a new challenge outside of English football or whether a return to West Ham, where his illustrious playing career began, would hold greater appeal.
