Atletico Madrid open Mason Greenwood transfer talks as Diego Simeone's side aim to beat Barcelona in race for Man Utd outcast

The 22-year-old forward is currently in Spain enjoying a loan spell at Getafe. He has caught the eye since being cleared to resume a professional career that was put on hold in January 2022. Greenwood was cleared of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour charges in February 2023.

He has registered five goals and four assists for Getafe this season, bringing him to the attention of leading clubs in La Liga. With there seemingly no way back for Greenwood at Old Trafford, despite working on a contract until 2025, a permanent transfer is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.

Marca reports that Atletico Madrid have started to ask questions of United and what it would take to get a deal done for Greenwood. Barcelona, Valencia and Real Sociedad have also been linked with the one-cap England international.

It is claimed that a £40 million ($51m) transfer package could be agreed for Greenwood when the time comes for him to sever ties with United, with a switch to Camp Nou considered to be “highly unlikely” at this stage despite some suggestions that Barca were willing to hand the talented winger their No.10 shirt – which was once worn by club legend Lionel Messi.
