'Absolutely a red card!' - Fans in disbelief as Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings somehow escapes sending off for 'serious foul play' after elbow on Bournemouth's Alex Scott

Villa faced Bournemouth on Saturday and Mings was at the centre of an ugly incident early in the first-half. While chasing the ball, the defender appeared to throw his elbow towards midfielder Alex Scott, who was chasing behind him, and fans were left astonished that VAR did not recommend a red card for the England international.

@HackettRef, the account of former referee Keith Hackett, said: "Well Tyrone Mings clearly has used his arm/elbow in an illegal manner. The backward movement of his arm/elbow is at least reckless. He is rather fortunate to avoid a sanction. VAR can only intervene on a red card offence and has determined there is insufficient force. Lucky!"

@RichardDavies20 concluded: "Can someone please explain how that elbow by Mings on Scott wasn't looked at closer??"

Mings has not been as ever-present in Villa's backline this season as usual and has been limited to just 13 Premier League outings, mainly due to his recovery from an ACL injury. He is perhaps fortunate that he is not facing up to a suspension that would have seen him ruled out of their final two games of the campaign.

Villa round off their season against Tottenham and Manchester United as they aim to qualify for the Champions League. Ironically, their final two opponents will both be playing in the Europa League final, so Unai Emery's side may face rotated teams.
