  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Cameroonian goalkeeper was implicated in two of the Seagulls’ goals at Old Trafford, raising questions about his reliability in goal. Onana failed to claim a cross from Kaoru Mitoma, which led to Brighton’s second goal and later spilt a low cross that allowed Georginio Rutter to seal the match for the visitors. These mistakes have intensified calls for Amorim to reconsider his goalkeeping options.

    WHAT SAHA SAID

Former United striker Louis Saha did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance, calling for a culture of accountability at the club.

In an interview with Paddy Power Saha said, "There is a need for every player at Manchester United – apart from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo – to feel threatened with competition. No one has shown that they deserve anything in the next game. The manager can challenge and criticise them because it’s not good enough.

“The backbone of this team, from the back four to the centre forwards, it’s so important that they don't make mistakes. Unless you can guarantee that you’re not going to make mistakes, you should not be considered as a guaranteed starter in any position. None of those players should be guaranteed anything. If you don't have a confident goalkeeper he has to be challenged. Those performances are unacceptable, it’s not normal!”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United spent £48m ($59m) on Onana to lure him from Inter as they viewed him as a long-term replacement for David de Gea. However, frequent mistakes between the sticks have seen him getting compared to Massimo Taibi, the former Italian keeper who played just four times before Alex Ferguson decided to part ways with him.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

With another Premier League defeat adding to United’s struggles, Amorim must now decide whether to persist with Onana or hand an opportunity to Altay Bayindir, the Turkish goalkeeper who has shown promising form in training. Bayindir, signed as competition for Onana, has yet to feature prominently but may be in line for a chance to prove his worth.

The upcoming fixture against Fulham in the English top flight presents a challenging test for the Red Devils. The Cottagers have already demonstrated their ability to compete with top sides, having secured points against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool this season. For Amorim, the match is not just about securing three points but also restoring confidence and stability to a team currently languishing in the 13th position on the league table.
