Ahead of World Cup 2022, adidas joins forces with the Japan Football Association and streetwear pioneer NIGO - artistic director for KENZO and designer for Human Made - to reveal the Japan National Team Special Collection.

The Special Collection comes inspired by the traditional culture and craftsmanship of Japan, featuring a minimalistic and classic design approach throughout. The combination of pale mauve and fresh green reflects the symbolic colours of cherry blossoms and "Sakuramochi", the seasonal confectionery, widely loved and enjoyed for years by people in Japan.

Along with the unique colour combo, the back of the jersey makes further reference to the beloved flower with a cherry blossom emblem featuring the iconic heart motif NIGO is known for. The number 22 - featured on the back of the jersey - is a nod to a special year in the international football calendar.

With an aim to establish football as a culture deeply connected to people's lifestyles in Japan, the design pays homage to the Japan National Teams and what they mean to the people in Japan; the uniting force that brings the joy and delight of sports to everyone regardless of age, gender and other boundaries that exist in society.

"The simplistic design of the Special Collection was inspired by the symbolic culture of Japan such as Cherry Blossoms," said NIGO on the collaboration and its significance. "It is my hope that beyond any boundaries, between players and supporters or one nation and the rest of the world, we all can unite under football and share a common joy."
