Henry Onyekuru goal propels Eupen to victory

Henry Onyekuru scored the winner in AS Eupen’s 1-0 win at Gent in a Belgian Pro League encounter on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was involved in a row with the Pandas over his preferred destination during the January transfer window and was missing from three consecutive matchday squads. He, however, made a return to Jordi Condom’s squad in their 2-0 home loss against Waasland-Beveren and continued against Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s side.

Playing against compatriots, Samuel Kalu, Anderson Esiti and second half substitute, Moses Simon, the highly rated winger benefitted from a Jose Cases’ assist to score a last-gasp winner at the Ghelamco Arena.

Nigeria internationals William Troost-Ekong and Rabiu Ibrahim were not involved; the former was left on the bench, while the latter was out due to injury. While Anthony Bassey and Georges Jamabo could not also get game time for the winning side.

The goal is the youngster’s 11th of the season, in 24 appearances for his 13th placed side. In their next Belgian topflight encounter, they welcome Kortrijk to the Kehrwegstadion on February 18.
