  • Loan deal in Spain expected to be extended
  • Ratcliffe set to acquire stake in Red Devils
  • Plans to be drawn up for 2024-25
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils allowed the 22-year-old forward to depart Old Trafford towards the end of the summer transfer window. An initial six-month loan deal with Getafe was put in place, with the expectation being that he will be allowed to see out the 2023-24 campaign in Spain. Greenwood has made a positive impression on the field at Getafe, with a stunning goal recorded in a La Liga clash with Almeria – one of four efforts he has recorded this season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The one-cap England international is under contract in Manchester until 2025, but has not figured for United since January 2022 – following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, coercive behaviour, and assault. Those charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

  • WHAT ROMANO SAID ABOUT GREENWOOD

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is about to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils, in a partial takeover of the Premier League club, and change is being planned. Decisions will have to be made on Greenwood at some stage, but Fabrizio Romano has told CaughtOffside of that process: “Incoming co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is already discussing Greenwood’s situation internally, and from what I’m told, he’s made no decision at all and nothing will be decided in December. So the idea is to take some time and just let Greenwood play football. Then, based on his performances for Getafe, Man United will discuss their position and that of the player. This will likely take place in March, April or May. There will be many different factors to consider, and obviously the new Man United board will have a new CEO and new people in charge of the transfer market, meaning that they will all decide on transfer business together.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

Greenwood is starting to feel more settled in Spain, as he gets to grips with a new language and culture, and a completely fresh start is expected to be taken on in 2024 as United sever ties with a product of their famed academy system.
