Man Utd plot shock move for struggling Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips

The England international is all set to leave City in the upcoming January transfer window after Pep Guardiola made it clear that the midfielder will not feature in his team regularly in the ongoing season.

Now The Sun reports that United are monitoring the situation of Phillips at the club and could make a shock move for the English star in January.

The report further claims that the former Leeds player could go out on loan in January and then make his move permanent in the summer. Erik ten Hag, who is known to be an admirer of the player, wants to remain ahead in the transfer race and seal the deal ahead of clubs like Newcastle who are also keen on signing the player.

The 28-year-old has appeared in just eight matches across all competitions this season and has clocked 215 minutes on the pitch. He has featured in Guardiola's starting lineup only once which was against Newcastle in a Carabao Cup third round clash.

The Red Devils have to bolster their midfield in the upcoming window as Sofyan Amrabat's summer loan move has failed to add much value to the squad. They are also considering selling Casemiro and Christian Eriksen with both players having offers from Saudi Arabia.

It remains to be seen if United go after the City outcast or whether Eddie Howe manages to rope him in at Newcastle.
