Batshuayi’s brother stars but Mbappe steals the show - The Ligue 1 Performance Index

Four Ligue 1 teams are left standing with perfect records after two rounds of fixtures, including both newly-promoted clubs Nimes and Reims, who respectively shocked Marseille and Lyon this weekend.

Enterprising Dijon are the third, while Paris Saint-Germain are the only familiar face towards the top of the table.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, though, were given a massive scare in Guingamp, where they fell 1-0 behind and were rocking before the break.

It was Kylian Mbappe whose arrival turned the game on its head. Neymar might have drawn PSG level from the penalty spot, but it was the 19-year-old striker who won them the game in the closing minutes of the match.

Using his outrageous speed to great effect, he tore away from the home defence twice and finished with customary aplomb. Little surprise, then, that Opta has the World Cup winner top of the Ligue 1 Performance Index this week with an impressive score of 98.3.

Trailing him marginally is Julio Tavares, on a tally of 98.1. The Cape Verde striker was Dijon’s main man as they claimed a 2-0 home success over Nantes, scoring both goals with opportunistic finishes.

Completing the podium positions is Montpellier midfielder Florent Mollet, who enjoyed a profitable debut for the Stade de la Mosson club as they tackled Amiens. Playing just behind the forwards, he provided the attacking punch they had lacked in a home loss to Dijon a week earlier when he was banned.

Indeed, the top five positions are monopolised by players who won their side games at the weekend. 

Matthieu Dossevi's strike 23 minutes from the end against crisis-ridden Bordeaux gave the men from the Pink City their first victory of the season. Having collected a lay-off from Max Gradel, the former Metz man fired a low shot into the net for his first goal for the club.

He collected a points tally of 91.2 from Opta, just a little better off than team-mate Aaron Leya Iseka. Michy Batshuayi’s brother is now in his second spell in Ligue 1 and looks altogether better equipped to shine than he did first time around with Marseille. He emphasised that by opening the scoring in Sunday’s derby with a brilliant curling shot.

The Toulouse pair sandwich Rennes winger Ismaila Sarr. The Bretons’ fixture against Angers would have been an entirely forgettable affair had he not lit the game up when in possession; the highlight a stunning winning goal, scored from the corner of the box.

Another man to get an important late goal was Makhat Gueye, who was one of the stories of the weekend in France as he helped 10-man Saint-Etienne pinch a point in Strasbourg. Just four minutes into his Ligue 1 debut, he levelled the game with a sharp finish, giving him a score of 87.9.

Rounding off this week’s ranking are Montpellier’s Ellyes Skhiri, who was on target against Amiens, and Reims’ match-winner Pablo Chavarria, whose downward header was enough to get the weekend off to a bang as they stunned Lyon. Despite OL’s shock defeat, Tanguy Ndombele ranked seventh with his individual display.

Next week’s highlights include PSG hosting Angers, in which Mbappe will be seeking both more goals and more minutes as he aims to top the ranking once more.
