Alonso visited Anfield for the first time since leaving the club for Real Madrid as a player in 2009 as his team Bayer Leverkusen faced the Reds in a Champions League clash on Tuesday night. The outcome of the game did not go in the Spaniard's favour as the hosts claimed a thumping 4-0 win riding on Luis Diaz's hat-trick.
After the game, Alonso shared a lighthearted conversation with former Liverpool colleague Carragher and his CBS crew live on television. CBS host Abdo first asked Alonso if he keeps in touch through text messages with the former England defender, while claiming that Carragher often lies.
The Leverkusen boss, in response, said: "No, not that much, I can't believe it. Carra, yeah for sure. We text, we have always texted. Even when I left Liverpool, he forgot me pretty soon. So, we have kept in contact."
Carragher then joined the conversation as he said: "We were texting this morning! We had a little text this morning. Xabi was in Liverpool, he was going for a run. I had my spies around watching, keeping an eye on him, making sure everything was okay. How did it all go Xabi?"
Alonso's reply was: "Pretty good. It was good to see my old house, the old streets, my old coffees (cafes) where I used to go. And I know that you are the boss in the city so I couldn't get out of you."
Getty Images SportThe Reds are in red-hot form since the start of the 2024-25 season and are now unbeaten in their last 11 games across all competitions, out of which they have won on 10 occasions. Arne Slot's side are currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table and are also at the summit in the Champions League table after a perfect start to their campaign.
