Scalvini has been on Newcastle's radar even before he succumbed to a shoulder injury last season, which was not the first one of the season. He was out from June to November due to a cruciate ligament rupture, and featured in only eight fixtures last season - six in the Serie A, and one each in the Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League. In late January, he suffered a shoulder injury that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign. Despite his fitness struggles, the Magpies see the 21-year-old as an option to bolster their defensive third.
