Gary Lineker reveals who he'd have chosen for England manager job after seeing Thomas Tuchel receive 'unbelievable opportunity'

<p>Former <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/thomas-tuchel-named-england-manager-ex-chelsea-bayern-munich-boss-oversee-bid-2026-world-cup-glory/bltfa32673f01069cf5" target="_blank">Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel</a> has been appointed England's new permanent manager, succeeding Gareth Southgate in the hot seat. The German has signed an 18-month deal and will lead England's bid for World Cup 2026 glory. Tuchel is just the third foreign coach to take charge of the Three Lions and the first from Germany.</p><p></p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p><a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/harry-redknapp-rages-england-s-thomas-tuchel-coaching-jibe-questions-ex-chelsea-manager-s-track-record/blt9486d0d24dd28afa" target="_blank">Tuchel's appointment had already drawn criticism</a> from Harry Redknapp, while some <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/england-thomas-tuchel-decision-fa-german-manager/bltdd21991c2eb59ce3" target="_blank">fans have also been angered by the decision</a>. Lineker has now admitted that Tuchel would not have been his choice for the job, although he feels the German has a superb opportunity to end England's long wait for a second World Cup.</p><p></p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>The former England striker said on <em>The Rest is Football</em> podcast: "Tuchel will have looked at this squad and thought there is so much talent in there, this is an unbelievable opportunity of winning the greatest trophy of all. I would have given the job to [Lee] Carsley. I have seen enough to suggest the players really trust him, that he's imaginative enough to produce something that is a joy to watch - entertaining front-footed football."</p>

WHAT LINEKER SAID

<p>Carsley, who has overseen England's last four games, will continue to take charge of the team for November's Nations League matches against Ireland and Greece. It's then over to Tuchel, who will officially start work with England on January 1st.</p><p></p>
