Ex-Man Utd forward Mason Greenwood 'doesn't exist' in England anymore despite delivering impressive form on the back of £27m Marseille transfer

The 23-year-old severed ties with the Red Devils on a permanent basis when completing a £27 million ($33m) transfer to France in the summer of 2024. He had spent the campaign immediately prior to that move being made on loan at La Liga outfit Getafe – winning their Player of the Year award during his solitary season in Spain.

United cashed in on Greenwood when it became apparent that there was no professional future for him in his homeland. He saw allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour dropped in February 2023, but was never welcomed back into the first-team fold at Old Trafford.

He is now starring in Ligue 1, registering 14 goals so far this season, but is not a name that generates widespread publicity in England. In fact, Julien Laurens claims that Greenwood has become a taboo subject in that part of the world.

Laurens, who works as an English football specialist for RMC Sport, has told After Foot: “He doesn't exist anymore. On the BBC, in the Euroleagues show on European and foreign football, we don't talk about Mason Greenwood. We can talk about Marseille, [Roberto] De Zerbi, [Adrien] Rabiot… People complain, write to the BBC saying: ‘Why are you talking about him? We shouldn't talk about him’.”

It was that stance which made it impossible for Greenwood to consider a move to another Premier League club once the exit doors swung open in Manchester. Laurens added: “In England, he couldn't have gone anywhere, it was not possible for him to go to an English club.”

Greenwood has embraced another fresh start at Stade Velodrome, becoming an important figure for Marseille, and is said to be in the process of switching international allegiance from England – with whom he has won one cap – to Jamaica.
