Brazil Copa America 2024 squad: Who Dorival Junior will take to the United States

Brazil are not in a good place. Ever since they were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup by Croatia in the quarter-finals, the five-time global champions have lurched from one crisis to the next, and thus questions are being asked as to whether they can even be considered among the favorites to win the 2024 Copa America.

Of course, the Selecao could yet click into gear, and they certainly have an attacking depth that is almost unmatched anywhere else in the world, but they need to find some form in the weeks leading into the tournament after a miserable end to 2023 that saw them lose three successive World Cup qualifiers.

Fernando Diniz paid for that run with his job, and he has been replaced as manager by veteran Dorival Junior, with Carlo Ancelotti now off the table as an option after he committed himself to Real Madrid, despite significant interest from the South American nation in his services.

Dorival wasted little time in naming his squad for the Copa America, confirming an initial 23 names who will represent Brazil on May 10 before adding three more nine days later after CONMEBOL increased roster sizes for the tournament. But who made the cut? GOAL lays it out...

    GOALKEEPERS

While Alisson Becker has largely remained ahead of Ederson in the Brazil goalkeeper pecking order for a number of years, it remained to be seen who Dorival would prefer after both shot-stoppers missed March's friendlies due to injury. However, a fractured eye socket suffered by Ederson in Manchester City's penultimate Premier League match of the season has ruled him out of the tournament, meaning Alisson has a free run at the No.1 jersey this summer.

    DEFENDERS

Though we are yet to see Dorival's take charge of a full-strength squad, he is likely to stick with tried and tested centre-back duo Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes of Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, respectively. Eder Militao, though, could force his way into contention if he can prove his fitness for Real Madrid over the final stretch heading into the Champions League final for Los Blancos.

In the full-back positions, Manchester City loanee Yan Couto is pushing for a starting spot on the right after an impressive season in La Liga with Girona, while Porto's recently capped left-back Wendell has a chance to earn starting spot now.

    MIDFIELDERS

Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes are locked-in starters for Brazil, and are likely to be joined by a more defensive-minded midfielder like Douglas Luiz in what is a pretty experienced trio for the Selecao to call upon.

Wolves' Joao Gomes, Fulham playmaker Andreas Pereira and Atalanta' Ederson round-out the midfield, with a new fresh look taking center-stage for the Selecao this summer.

    FORWARDS

The Brazil attack is unbelievably stacked with talent from around the world. Locked-in Real Madrid duo Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr will occupy the wings, with Real Madrid-bound wonderkid Endrick competing for starting minutes with Porto's Evanilson centrally.

Savio, who has impressed plenty with his performances for Girona this season, joins Gabriel Martinelli, Raphinha and late call-up Pepe as the other attackers selected for the tournament this summer.

    EXPECTED XI

The biggest unknown for Brazil as Dorival continues to mold his team is who he will select as his central striker. Endrick may well have forced his way into the lineup after scoring against England and Spain in March friendlies, though he must first prove his fitness after being stretchered off in what turned out to be his final appearance for Palmeiras in May.

The coach also has decisions to make at full-back, but otherwise the team largely picks itself, presuming the Selecao suffer no more injuries.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Yan Couto, Gabriel, Marquinhos, Arana; Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz, Paqueta; Rodrygo, Endrick, Vinicius.

    NOTABLE ABSENTEES

The all-time leading scorer for Brazil, and the symbol of football in their country for the past decade, Neymar will miss the tournament after he suffered an ACL injury while on international duty in October. Whether he even plays again for his country remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, 2022 World Cup hero Richarlison has missed out alongside Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus up top, while midfield stalwart Casemiro was the surprise omission as the veteran paid for his poor form with Manchester United. As previously laid out, goalkeeper Ederson will also play no part due to a late-season injury.
