Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang eclipses Robert Lewandowski with double

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang engraved his name in Borussia Dortmund’s history books by reaching a milestone with a brace in the 6-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The talisman was amongst the scorers as strikes from Ousmane Dembele, Christian Pulisic, Andre Schurrle, Raphael Guerreiro as well as his brace saw Dortmund secure a big win at Westfalenstadion. This was Aubameyang’s second brace in consecutive matches.

The goals took Auba past the 75-goal mark for BVB.

Marco Reus’ corner to the back post was met by Marc Bartra’s header, but his effort deflected off Tin Jedvaj and fell to Aubameyang, who had made a late run from the far post to easily tap in his first in the 26th minute.

Another Dortmund set-piece, this time a free kick by Guerreiro into the box, was poorly cleared by Kai Havertz and fell to Dembele, who picked out Aubameyang at the far post with a stunning curled effort. The former Saint-Etienne man made no mistake with a headed effort in the 69th minute.

With Saturday’s goals, the Gabonese hitman scored his 74th and 75th Bundesliga goals in only 117 games for Dortmund, eclipsing the previous record held by former Dortmund striker and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, who recorded 74 goals in 131 games.

Not only did the 27-year-old eclipse Lewandowski’s record, he also bagged his 20th and 21st strikes of the season in as many games, two more than his biggest rival – Lewandowski has scored 19 times in 23 matches.

The win sees Dortmund continue their surge for a Uefa Champions League spot come the end of the season.
