Vietnam go into this tournament as strong favorites for the titlte after achieving success at the AFC U-23 Championship and Asian Games this year. Before he was hired by Vietnam in October 2010, Park was best known for assisting Guus Hiddink in South Korea's storied 2002 World Cup campaign. He also guided the South Korea U-23 team to the semi-final stage of the 2002 Asian Games. In Vietnam, he has guided Vietnam U-23 to a runners-up finish in the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship, and the 2018 Asian Games semi-finals.

Park prefers to use three centre backs, and his team had success utilising it in the Asian Games and the AFC U-23 Championship, in which they faced more-formidable sides. Under the guidance of the Korean tactician, Vietnam focus more on building a solid defence and organising speedy counter attacks. This tactic requires a lot of energy, so the squad are composed of physically-fit players who can run throughout the 90 minutes, and then some.
