"What was going on with Dortmund?": Legendary manager slams BVB

Former manager Eduard Geyer has heavily criticised Borussia Dortmund for their performance in the Champions League play-off second leg away to Atalanta Bergamo. In their second clash with the Italians, BVB had squandered a 2-0 lead. In the final moments of the match, a mistake by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel led to a penalty, which Atalanta converted to make it 4-1. Last week, the Italians were then left with no chance in the first leg of the round of 16 against FC Bayern Munich, losing 6-1 at the same venue.

  • In *kicker*, Geyer drew a comparison between BVB and FCB – and, as expected, it didn’t go well for the Black and Yellows.

The former Energie Cottbus manager said of Munich’s 6-1 win: “The only surprise was the clarity of the victory, and you have to wonder what was going on with Borussia Dortmund the round before, that they went down 1-4 at the same ground.”

Eduard Geyer: "The gap in quality in the Bundesliga is enormous"

In his view, the two matches in Bergamo – which ended with mixed results for the two German teams – point to just one conclusion: "Behind FC Bayern, who have represented us so well on the international stage for years, the gap in quality in the Bundesliga is enormous," wrote Geyer.

In the Bundesliga, manager Vincent Kompany’s FCB side are well clear at the top after 26 matchdays: their lead over Dortmund, who currently sit in second place, stands at nine points. Munich have secured 12 of the last 13 Bundesliga titles: only Bayer Leverkusen managed to break their run in the 2023/24 season. Dortmund last lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2013 under manager Jürgen Klopp.
