  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In a heated El Clasico, Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr tried to take a quick free-kick outside his own box, which resulted in losing possession and allowed Barcelona's Lamine Yamal a shot at goal. A sharp save from the Belgian ensured he didn't concede, with the Madrid goalkeeper then exploding at Vinicius and appearing to say "Vini, p**a madre", which directly translates to "Vini, motherf*****". There are alternative meanings to the Spanish expression, if indeed that's what Courtois actually said, although all feature expletives and are an expression of intense frustration.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Notably, this wasn’t the only moment in the match where Vinicius Jr drew frustration from his team-mates. Later in the game, with Real Madrid pushing forward, Kylian Mbappe created space and positioned himself perfectly to receive a pass. However, Vini chose to go for goal himself and missed the target. Mbappe was visibly frustrated, gesturing to the Brazilian that he had been wide open. Indeed, Madrid would go on to lose the game 4-3, all but ending their hopes of winning the Liga title.

    WHAT COURTOIS SAID

Courtois has urged greater teamwork and accountability amid the team's recent dip in form. "Sometimes you have to be self-critical and evaluate everything," the 33-year-old said following the Champions League loss to Arsenal in April. "This needs to be done by everyone… we have to focus more on team plays, not just individual efforts."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

With Vinicius Jr now sidelined by a left ankle sprain and manager Carlo Ancelotti set to depart for the Brazil job at the end of the season, Real Madrid will face a crucial period of transition. Los Blancos have two league games remaining as they host Mallorca on May 14 before travelling to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to play Sevilla on May 18. Anything les than a win on Wednesday would officially crown Barcelona as La Liga champions.
