WSL champions Chelsea are in the United States as part of their pre-season preparations. With legendary coach Emma Hayes having moved on to take charge of the USWNT – leading them to Olympic gold medal glory in Paris – ex-Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor is now at the helm.

She will have been impressed by what she saw in a clash with NWSL outfit Gotham. Chelsea raced into a three-goal lead as Johanna Rytting Kaneryd bagged a brace and Aggie Beever-Jones also found the target inside 26 minutes.

A familiar face did peg the Blues back, with England international Carter bundling home a close-range volley just past the half-hour mark to open her account for Gotham following a summer transfer to the United States – with the 26-year-old bringing a six-year spell in west London to a close.

Carter – who has 36 England caps to her name - is now focused on the return of NWSL action after an Olympic Games-enforced break, while Chelsea are preparing to face domestic foes Arsenal in another glamour friendly on Sunday that will take place in Washington DC.
