Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and Co headed into a major international tournament with excitement building among a loyal fan base. Talk of piecing together a bid for ultimate glory was played down, but the expectation was that progress to the knockout stages could be made.
The USMNT failed to make it through to the quarter-finals, with progress proving out of reach for the first time at an event in which they won their first game. On 23 previous occasions, the United States had made it out of their group after opening with a win.

It is now a case of back to the drawing board for the USMNT, with questions being asked of head coach Gregg Berhalter.
